Surgery is essential for the diagnosis and treatment of certain gynecologic cancers. Compass gynecologic oncologists are well known as technology leaders in minimally invasive surgical techniques. They were among the first in the nation to recognize the benefits of laparoscopic surgery and are the most experienced surgeons in Oregon and Southwest Washington with treating gynecologic cancers utilizing the da Vinci® robotic system.
Minimally invasive surgeries (MIS) offer distinct advantages to women. By eliminating the large abdominal incisions in open surgeries, there is less trauma to the body. Recovery is faster, and hospital stays are shorter. There is less pain and scarring, with less risk of infection. Access is gained through tiny incisions. State-of-the-art cameras and instrumentation are used to visualize and remove cancer. MIS can be performed with a laparoscope or with the da Vinci® robotic system. The latter offers additional capabilities than traditional laparoscopy, allowing more women to receive MIS.
Despite the great advances in MIS, not all patients are candidates for this surgical approach. Our gynecologic surgeons are highly skilled in all pelvic surgical techniques and dedicated to providing their patients with the least invasive options for care.
