Bile Duct Cancer Care in Portland-Vancouver

Understanding Bile Duct Cancer

Bile is a fluid that aids in the digestion of fats in the foods we eat. It’s produced in the liver, stored in the gallbladder, and flows into the small intestine for digestion. The connection between the liver, gallbladder, and small intestine is a network of tubes called the bile duct network.

Small bile ducts within the liver join to form the right and left hepatic ducts that drain bile from the right and left lobes of the liver and then merge outside the liver to create the common hepatic duct. The cystic duct connects the gallbladder to the common hepatic duct. Bile produced by the liver travels through the hepatic ducts, common hepatic duct, and cystic duct before being stored in the gallbladder.

Types of Bile Duct Cancer

Cancer that develops in any area of the bile duct is considered bile duct cancer. Once doctors identify the location of the cancer, they classify it into one of three groups that best describe the type.

The bile duct cancer types include:

Intrahepatic bile duct cancer

This type of cancer forms in the bile ducts inside the liver and is less common than other types of bile duct cancer. Intrahepatic bile duct cancers are also known as intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas.

Perihilar (hilar) bile duct cancer

This type of cancer occurs in the area where the right and left bile ducts exit the liver and join to form the common hepatic duct. Perihilar bile duct cancer may also be called Klatskin tumor or perihilar cholangiocarcinoma.

Distal bile duct cancer

This type of cancer develops in the area where the ducts from the liver and gallbladder join to form the common bile duct. The common bile duct passes through the pancreas and ends in the small intestine. Distal bile duct cancer is also called extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

After a confirmed diagnosis of bile duct cancer, an oncologist will determine the extent of the cancer through a process called staging. The information gathered from staging helps GI cancer specialists determine where the tumor is located and whether it has spread. Knowing the stage also helps plan the best treatment for your specific diagnosis.
